As you may have heard in the news, an incident in one of Monday’s support class races led to the deaths of two riders. Owen Jenner and Shane Richardson passed away despite the efforts of medical staff to save their lives. At the time of writing, their fellow British Supersport championship competitor Tom Tunstall is in hospital after suffering serious injuries.
Steve Hicken, MasterMac Honda’s team manager, said:
“We are all devastated by what happened over the weekend and send our condolences to Owen’s and Shane’s families, friends and teams. We are also thinking of Tom and hoping he makes a full recovery.
“Bennetts BSB is a tight-knit community and I know that many people reading this will be affected in some way by what happened too. We are grateful for the efforts of medical staff and marshals who did all they could to help the riders involved.”
Most of the weekend’s racing was complete before the incident led to the third Bennetts BSB race being cancelled.
MasterMac Honda had made a promising start, with Charlie Nesbitt sixth in the Bennetts BSB championship standings after two strong 7th place finishes. John McPhee rode steadily to two 15th places on his debut ride in the category, as the former Moto3 World Championship rider adapts both to superbikes and British circuits.
Meanwhile Dan Brooks was an impressive eighth, representing MasterMac Honda in the Pirelli National Superstock series.
Steve said:
“What happened on Monday afternoon completely overshadows the rest of the weekend, but I’d like to thank everyone in the team, our sponsors and supporters for helping us get the campaign underway. There were really encouraging signs in the performances of all three of our riders.
“It will be difficult for them and for everyone involved in the championship but we will all pull together and be back racing at Donington.”
The season continues at the Leicestershire circuit from 16-18 May.
